- Conjunto de actitudes, creencias, rituales y símbolos cuasirreligiosos que vinculan a miembros de una comunidad política.Tal como lo formuló originalmente Jean Jacques Rousseau, el concepto refiere a las virtudes que deben poseer los ciudadanos para servir a la patria. El concepto fue ampliado después por el sociólogo estadounidense Robert N. Bellah (n. 1927), quien encontró en EE.UU. un fuerte sentimiento de "excepcionalidad estadounidense y la veneración de elementos seculares como la bandera nacional, la constitución, los fundadores de la nación, el calendario de festividades y los conceptos de individualismo y de confianza en sí mismo. El confucianismo representa otra forma de religión civil en la que la nación se subordina a un orden moral.
